MudFace
By Cheryl Hagedorn
Prussian blue and burnt sienna,
Aureolin, Indian yellow:
I laid them down, I scraped them off.
I laid them, laved them, led them.
I stroked and scratched; I layered.
Over all I poured sepia, nearly black
With grit. I splashed, I slopped;
I took the razor blade and scraped.
I found a chin, a nose.
Prussian blue and burnt sienna,
Aureolin, Indian yellow:
I laid them down, I scraped them off.
I laid them, laved them, led them.
I splashed; I slopped again.
I took the razor blade and scraped.
I found the eyes, now badly bruised.
A cheek, the brow.
I splashed; I slopped. With razor blade
I scraped.
I found the other cheek.
I filled in blanks with Prussian blue and burnt sienna,
Aureolin, Indian yellow.
I washed. I scrubbed. I stroked. I scratched
Until the face before me said, "Enough."
*"Mud Face" is the title of a watercolor painting.
